An exciting week for the Godot community. We already have some snippets of the next version of the engine, and the submissions for the Godot reel are open! Also, the community has provided excellent tutorials in the past two weeks.
Let’s get into it!
News
We just got version 4.3, and the first snapshot for 4.4 is ready to test. One of the remarks on this snapshot is the first iteration on the Metal backend. That’s a huge milestone for iOS and MacOS support. To learn more about this first dev version of 4.4 check the following link

One of the “flaws” many mention about the engine is the lack of console port support. Finally, we got an official response on the matter with a lot of information. I strongly recommend this reading

Submissions are open for the 2024 Godot showreel! If you don’t know what this is, is the opportunity to showcase your project (in progress or published) in the official showreel video. Every year, the folks from Godot build this video to share the different projects the community is building with the engine. For more information check the following link

This was one of my favorite articles this week. Is provided by an interview from Game Developer to Rémi Verschelde and Juan Linietsky. They discuss how the Unity debacle impacted the Godot project and their view of the whole issue. I don’t want to spoil anything in the summary so go and read it
Industry News
Some of the most important news in the past weeks regarding the gaming industry.
One that took everyone’s attention in the past few weeks, was the shutdown of the game Concord. Why is this so important? One of the biggest failures in game history because it was a AAA first-party Sony game, was in development for at least 8 years, had peak concurrent players was about 700 people, and was live for no more than two weeks. There is still a discussion if the game will come back or not, I’ll be surprised if the game comes back. Check the official post below

Another big news this week was the release of Star Wars Outlaws. But the biggest news regarding that release is the Ubisoft share price fall. Not only that but also the price drop was the biggest one in the last 10 years. We all saw the previews of this game and we all know the game wasn’t to be a mayor hit, but I never expected this backlash for Ubisoft. I’m wondering how this will impact the company, but won’t be surprised if we read about layoffs in the following months.
From the Community
This is still from the official site, but embracing the community. The article talks about the experience of interacting with the community and developers during Gamescon 2024.
